The Permalink is the permanent location for a particular post. When a post is no longer displayed on the Main Index page, it is still always accessible at the Permalink location. With the increasing acceptance of web sources including online books and online journals in academic writing, permalinks are needed to ensure the quoted URL refers to the exact source and not a modified or updated version. So if you wish you could click on the "Permalink" link and it will take you to the location of that Post. Then if you wanted to, you could Bookmark it or make it a Favorite to your desktop. This is not to replace the need or desire for a RSS Feed which will keel you informed in real time of updates to that Post or to new posts added to a Blog that you subscribed to.
